lyrics

Still surfing high on a warm wave of applause by international critics and tastemakers for the recent second remix EP of his "wanderlust" debut, Tobias Meggle, the soul and skills behind sandboy, is offering another delicate slice of emotional content this summer. It is the last vinyl twelve inch release before the "echoes" album next september.
From and for the heart and soul… This is truly where it is meant to go and where it’s coming from when you are listening to these 2 brand new tracks presented for the first time here. Far from any preconceived idea or marketing thought, sandboy’s concept of collaboration is purely and simply the spontaneous birth of a human connection through the personality and reflection of another artist’s work. This approach was displayed previously with the karmic beauties of Esther Proud, Marishka Phillips, Nice Ferreira, Marianne Kirch or Nanar Vorperian and Tobias extended the hinterland family with 2 more significant golden voices of 21st century soul: London’s singer/songwriter Randolph Matthews and Berlin’s future Soul mermaid Clara Hill. More than studio sessions, both artists have shared sandboy’s family life and integrated deeply his artistic world, their love and generosity being reflected genuinely in their performances.

With "call out", Tobias layered beautifully a complex but discerning rhythm pattern in 7/8 with hypnotic virtues under his trademark Rhodes harmonies and Sebastian’s rolling bassline, leaving plenty of space to the writing and the lyrics of Randolph who matured his skills alongside Terry Callier, Julie Dexter, Zero 7 or Michelle Escoffery without forgetting his Low Budget Soul trio on Abstract Blue. Proudly compared to Leon Ware in the UK press, Randolph transcends the song by mesmerizing harmonies and African modulations to tear up the listeners soul by nature.
Even if unintentionally, expressed by sandboy himself, the African communion spirit is surrounding gently "common cause" too, where Clara Hill is reaching new heights of her talent in the hinterland studio by experimenting fresh vocal directions with lots of class and sobriety. Already touched by the grace of Jazzanova’s production and acclaimed for her Restless Times long player on the high standard Sonar Kollektiv imprint, Clara is bound to be a leading light in the sky of the  international nu-soul constellation. The song explores clearly new boundaries of hope in sandboy’s universe by delivering a sensual drive and appropriate Kalimba vibes, an instrument that Tobias got into when playing it to his new-born daughter Mia.

An enlightning introduction to the forthcoming "echoes" concept album conceived as a double angle sound journey in the poetic world of sandboy.

"Just wanna thanks u for this formidable cdr u send to me. U know I love Clara Hill… the restless time remix by Recloose on Sonar Kollektiv is great too. Randolph Matthews collaboration is very nice too, I usually prefer women voices… but it’s very soulful and I played it in a club last week and people loved it. Can’t wait 4 the Echoes album…"

(Paul Gamblin)

"The tracks are amazing!!!"
(DJ Nova)

Vor allem 'Call Out' gefällt mir extrem gut.
(Ralf Gum/GOGO Music)

"Simply divine music. Sandboy and Hinterland once again surpass excellence, distinguished nujazz nusoul"
(Alan Brown, Soul Seduction)

"I absolutely love CALL OUT!!! Love the music, the arrangement AND the voice of course! Although CALL OUT is my fave, I also like Common Cause… I think it’s one of Clara’s best vocal performances as yet! "
(Gerd/4Lux)

"Tobias Meggle under his alias of SANDBOY drops two spring / summers sweeteners via the Hinterland label. The drops "Call Out" featuring Randolph Matthews and "Common Cause" featuring Clara Hill (from the Jazzanova & Sonar Kollektiv camp). Both are pure magic and goes to prove that Tobias has the touch and is pulling out more than just rabbits from his hat. Respect!"
(Paul Gamblin/Black & Blue Radio Show)
