lyrics
Very few albums have succeeded to trigger off to me such a wide range
of emotions, contrasted feelings and childish fantasies than this labour
of love born in the heart of the Bavarian Alps.
Place of untouched beauty and delicate shelter of Tobias Meggle, this
is a place where anybody could find its rest and the inspiration of
a more peaceful world where harmonies of nature can embrace the musical
ones, where anybody who can open his heart can be touched by the simplicity
of voice tones and piano notes.
It could have been Sao Paulo, Berlin
or New York but the universal taste of Tobias work could only be born
from the serenity of Zwieselried, the starting point of the fantastical
"wanderlust", an initiatory journey in the forest of our souls. Only
a few weeks after its release, wanderlust, the album has deeply touched
and conquered the hearts of music lovers from Japan to Canada, intensified
by the warm welcome of luminaries such as Jimpster, Dom Servini, Alan
Brown and many others. All of them have understood that hinterland
is much more than the offshoot of Mr Meggle's vision. It is the metaphor
of a musical philosophy which has united a family of musicians and
singers under a common denominator, "music that has structure and texture,
clarity and subtlety, voice and vision" as states Tobias himself.
That is why this second EP and third twelve can work on its own orbit,
the journey of the mind operates once again amongst the classy retakes
of two of the album's highlights and the instrumental version of a
classic such as 'bsb', 'written in the leaves' or 'the hike'.
Genuine tribute to the fascinating city of Brasilia and its utopian
dream, 'bsb' oscillates between hope and felicidad and has given a
full spectrum of textures to its remixer to bring it on the dancefloor.
Focussing on the perfect tones of Nice Ferreira who litteraly drives
the mix, Rotterdam's hotshot and remix expert Gerd (known for his impeccable
4 Lux label & in demand remixer) creates an uptempo stormer raising
one's hat to Seiji & Kaidi with new synths hooks and a pulsating
groove that makes it an irresistible uplifting number in a kind of
Portuguese version of 4 Hero's classic 'Hold It Down'.
Drifting away from the dancefloor to the sofa, the love declaration
of 'written in the leaves' beautifully sung by Nanar Vorperian sees the
jazz core of the rhythmic section of Munich's Thomas Simmerl turn into
a lazy-hop groove slightly reminiscent of Detroit's Dwele. Simon & JJ
of London's Break Reform (favourites of Jazzanova & Gilles Peterson)
have crafted a very sober and tasty rerub of this special torch song
for a new millennium.
Already considered as a classic by several connoisseurs since its release
on the first hinterland EP, the bewitching atmosphere of 'the hike',
personified on the album by Nuyorican Marishka Phillips (proudly compared
to Ursula Rucker) is here offered as a raw beauty in the form of an
instrumental. As provocative and charming than the first time you contemplate
the naked grace of the woman you love, the track seems even more powerful
and complex than before.
More than a remix EP, I realised after several listenings that these
great reinterpretations brought me closer to the originals and
gave me the smooth taste that only great songs can provide: emotional & timeless.

"Wanderlust ist eines
der schönsten und meistunterschätzten Alben dieses Jahres.
Was innerhalb der Szene einheitlich Zustimmung erhielt, ist außerhalb
dessen (noch) unterrepräsentiert. Der Erste, der nun Sandboy
in Richtung der Fusion-Floors bringt, ist 4Lux-Labelhead Gerd, der
bsb in sein derzeit so geliebtes West-London-Gewand hüllt. Butterweich!
Schneebesen-Sahne-Kontrabass-Downbeat-Jazz,
der mich berührt, wie es zuletzt Kaos’ Renegades EP auf
Compost tat. Simple beauties!"
